Nepalese wine in the Market.


It is said that “wine is the intellectual part of a meal while meat is the material.” therefore wine is considered to be important part of the meal and symbol of civilized thing in most of the European countries and it is served at possibly in every occasions.
Wine is considered to be third most consumed liquid after water and beer. The wine drinking culture has been recently transcended to Nepal. The increasing number of Nepalese people drinking wine shows the string influence of western culture in Nepal.
 In many religions, wine was used and still being used as an offering to the god. In Newari custom, rice wine is offered to the auspicious occasions.  In Christianity, Holy Communion is incomplete without wine as it is taken as blood of Christ.
It is reported that  the world consumed about 6.9 billion gallon liters of  wine in 2009 and it is expected to increase by 0.75 billion liters by 2013.
Similarly, in Nepal, many young generation Nepalese people are drinking wine over beer or other beverage. It is estimated that about 150% increase in wine consumption since 2007 and it goes on increasing. Wine drinking has become as a fashion in Nepal. Most of the Nepalese consumer doesn’t know the social and health benefits of drinking wine, Nepalese consumers just drink to show they are adapting western culture, modernizations and  to show their higher status in the society. As we know wine itself is a “culture”, has social, cultural and health benefits  if taken correctly  .
Whatever may be the reason; there is drastic change in wine drinking culture in Nepal. It was estimated that over 450000 liters of wine is consumed in Nepal in 2009.
Most of the wine in Nepali  market  are  from Australia,spain,france,Italy,chilli and south Africa.there are also several popular local wine brands in the market like Hinwa,Grapple,Nettlange,Himali Ramble ,Aagan and Majheri.the market share of nepali wines is around 10 percent.
Hinwa,one of the most popular nepali wines is manufacture bu Makalu wine industries at  Sankhuwasbha.the manufacruring is started from 1995with around 90 cases and it produces 700 cases every month for Kathmandu valley only. It is made from wild fruits like Aaishelu, Chutro and Keshari costing from  Rs 325 per 750 ml bottle.
Grapple is another popular wine made from black grapes imported from india and apple from Mustang .it is manufactured by sakaro beverages with price Rs 355 for a 750 ml bottle.
Nettlange is also one of the most loved brand by Sakaro Beverages made from nettles(sishno) and oranges. A  750 ml Nettlange can be bought at Rs 455 and jumbo pack of 4 liters at Rs 1850.
For more health conscious people, there is totally chemical free wine in market called Himali Ramble produced by shree ram laxmi distillery at marpha,it is available in the market since 2000 and it is prepared by local people themselves by using domestic technology.
The Dadaghare winery produces Aagan and Majheri  which are produced by using local herbal plants,apple and Honey.
